Pantothenic acid is primarily present in the liver, kidneys and heart. It is essential for the formation of coenzyme-A (CoA) and acyl-carrier protein (ACP), two compounds that donate acyl groups. As acyl group metabolism is required for the production of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, the central nervous system also needs a steady level of the vitamin.
CoA is a cofactor for approximately four percent of the enzymes in humans, and its acetyl-CoA form is especially important for several metabolic reactions. It is required for incorporating fatty acids into membrane phospholipids and triglycerides and is used to generate energy in the Krebs cycle. Both acetyl-CoA and ACP also help mediate fatty acid synthesis. Recent research indicates that pantothenic acid helps maintain the natural barrier of the skin by promoting the growth of skin cells via keratinocyte growth factor production.
