Managing Gas, Bloating and Indigestion

Bloating and gas are usually tied to what and how you eat, so a few simple changes may ease your discomfort.

But, first let us explain to you how your system works and then talk about ways you can alleviate the discomfort so you can enjoy your holiday (or every day!) without discomfort.

The gastrointestinal system performs three primary functions:

  • Consuming food
  • Absorbing nutrients
  • Expelling waste

When your system is unable to adequately perform these functions many conditions can arise, like bloating, cramping, gas and indigestion. These conditions are indicators that something is hindering this process from running smoothly.

The aggravators that contribute to gastrointestinal issues include:

  • Inflammation
  • Stress
  • Anxiety
  • Food Sensitivities
  • Toxic build up
  • Lack of exercise
  • Nutritional deficiencies

When the gastrointestinal tract is irritated, it can cause discomfort in the form of gas, bloating and indigestion. These are the body’s ways of saying that something is not right. While relief from these discomforts may be the immediate goal, the overall approach should be to address the underlying source of the problem. For instance, in trying an elimination diet, one may discover that dairy is the aggravator. Removing lactose from the diet may then work to eliminate the problem.

Some suggestion to get you feeling better here are some natural remedies that can alleviate symptoms:

Herbal remedies

Herbal remedies work to alleviate the discomfort in the gastrointestinal tract by absorbing gas, reducing stress, increasing blood flow and eliminating toxins. Fennel, ginger, turmeric, and peppermint are particularly helpful in alleviating bloating and gas.

Vitamin and mineral supplements

There are many natural compounds that aid the body in digestion. When these vitamins, minerals and amino acids are out of balance, the GI tract cannot perform its primary functions. Boosting vitamin and mineral intake may help to restore balance to the GI tract. Vitamin B6 acts as a natural diuretic. Magnesium is highly recommended because of its ability to neutralize stomach acid and to aid other nutrients in performing their tasks.

Probiotics

Probiotics are healthy bacteria found in the digestive tract. They are essential to maintaining a healthy digestive system because they break down food, which can reduce gas and bloating. They also restore normal bowel function and promote regularity. “Probiotics” is becoming a popular term, and it is important to educate oneself on the strains and types of supplements available. A holistic nutritionist or integrative medical expert can answer these questions and make suggestions based on individual needs.

We suggest a comprehensive approach to managing gastrointestinal issues. One that works from the notion that all things within your body are connected. By eliminating the underlying aggravators that contribute to the problem, as well as managing the symptoms associated, you can create a better, healthier you!
