Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a condition that is very common in women but can also occur in men. It involves the loss of bone density due to gradual thinning of bone tissue. This puts osteoporosis patients at a greater risk of having brittle, easily broken bones. We often treat osteoporosis with vitamins D3 and K2, as well as calcium. Commercially available medications for osteoporosis are effective; however, the available doses may not be for each individual patient.

At Pure Integrative Pharmacy, we can compound specific preparations for individual patients’ needs. Along with these medications, Bioidentical Hormonal Replacement Therapy (BHRT) is also a great option for osteoporosis patients. After hormone levels are analyzed, we can make preparations of the hormones required for healthy bones. Along with more complex treatments like this, our pharmacists can also create highly absorbable vitamin D custom compounds.

Osteoporosis is normally associated with middle-aged to elderly women, but as mentioned above, it can occur in many demographics. We have seen many osteoporosis patients at Pure, but one of the most remarkable recovery stories comes from Alex. A 21-year-old woman, Alex suffered from osteoporosis as a result of a long-term battle with anorexia nervosa. Working with her doctor and dietitian, we created compounded medications and vitamin supplements to improve her bone health.
